Enter the Slasher House- Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks

Avey Tare, a member of the group Animal Collective, recently became a member of the newly formed group Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks, a side project devoted to his recent loves of '60s garage rock and campy horror themes. Avey Tare, also known by his birth name, David Portner, has had a few outings with other groups and solo, but none have sounded quite so direct and out of the usual Animal Collective mold. The psychedelic influences and synths are still definitely there, but the influence of the garage rock is readily apparent. The drumming is more audible on this than on any Collective release, and it has a more straight forward sound overall, and a more immediate feel.

While the garage rock influences are right in front of you, the horror vibe is a little more difficult to find. A creepy vocal delivery here, some cheesy piano stabs there, but for a horror themed side project, you'd expect more. That's not a bad thing, just a bit confusing. It was perhaps more confusing that Portner would want to emulate 'Monster Mash', but that's what he wanted, so here we are. There's a lot of sonic depth here, with a whole lot going on, and with the direct feel, it feels almost aggressive in the sense that all these sounds are rushing at you all at once. It took me a couple times to pick it apart and figure out what was going on. But I think that this is definitely a good project, and a pretty cool experience. Also, that stream with the video was awesome. They should have released this one ODDSAC style.

Out of a possible five stars, I give this one:
